This Hogs Breath "goes to the dogs" after blackout

NOSES were flaring in the kennels yesterday and then tails were wagging when the pooches at Friends of RSPCA got their canine teeth into some prime rib fillet.

The $600 worth of steak was supposed to be served up at Hogs Breath Cafe Gladstone but after a power cut on Saturday night more than 200 diners missed out.

What was its misfortune was the orphaned dogs' good fortune.

Hogs Breath owner Alex Staines said it was "when a life gives you lemons make lemonade" situation.

"It's the last thing you want to happen on Father's Day," he said. The 18-hour cooked prime rib is the signature meal at Hogs Breath and when the oven turned off during the night he could not serve the meat.

"Hogs Breath have very strict temperature gauges and because it wasn't within the tolerances we would have had to throw it out," he said.

"Instead of doing that I thought we could give it to the RSPCA."

Friends of the RSPCA Gladstone president Nicole Allison said the Hogs Breath gesture was an example of the Gladstone community's support for the organisation.

The dogs are usually fed dry biscuits and canned dog food donated by Science Diet and donation bins outside shopping centres.

Another thing the organisation need is more foster parents to take care of pets like Polo and Romeo until they find a permanent home.

The Friends of the RSPCA Gladstone is having a movie night on Saturday. Tickets to see The Secret Life of Pets can be bought at the Hot FM reception.
