Lowe plays down big talk ahead of Bunnies season opener

SOUTH Sydney back-rower Ben Lowe isn't buying too much into the hype surrounding his side's NRL premiership hopes.

The Rabbitohs are among the early favourites to win the title after their long-awaited return to the top four last season.

Souths last won a first-grade premiership in 1971 and there is immense pressure on the club to break that drought in 2013.

Lowe, a former Newtown junior, said that was just the expectation that came with playing for the "Pride of the League".

"It's just the history of the club, it comes with it," Lowe said.

"To be favourites, it's a good wrap to have but we're not going to look too much into it.

"We'll be looking forward to doing our job week-by-week and hopefully, when the finals come around, we'll be doing well."

Lowe was named to start at lock for the Rabbitohs in their NRL season-opener against the Sydney Roosters tomorrow night.

Lowe played every game from the bench in 2012 but he displaced captain Michael Crocker in last month's Charity Shield and has held on to his spot for round one.

Souths coach Michael Maguire said it was great for the club to have such fierce competition for starting positions.

"To be able to have those sorts of players on the bench, it's a good place to be moving into the first round," he said.

Lowe said he was eager to repay the faith Souths had shown in him.

"This is where I've played my NRL football and I love the club," Lowe said.

"It's going to be a big test for us all in playing against the Roosters.

"They've got a number of players there that can do a bit of damage so we'll be looking forward to the challenge."
