Gladstone one of the friendliest places for artist
GIRL FRIDAY: From Scotland to Houston and now Gladstone, artist Karen Swift has lived in lots of different communities.
But she rates Gladstone as one of the most friendly she's lived in.
"I'm a transient person, so I've liked getting to know the people who were born and bred here," she said.
"There's a real community spirit."
Mrs Swift moved to Gladstone and Australia three years ago from Scotland.
She followed her husband, a compliance manager at GLNG, here.
But she's busy working on three projects of her own in a bid to build up Gladstone's artistic community.
"I've always been creative so I developed my own art business called Squidgy," she said.
"I do mixed media including screen printing and acrylic painting."
Mrs Swift is also helping to develop the arts scene on Crow St, starting with the new Creative Gladstone art centre.
"I want to make it a precinct where a group of artists share a space, have markets and outdoor workshops," she said.
In her spare time, Mrs Swift likes to lap up the warm weather.
"The climate here is magic, apart from when you hear there is a Category 5 cyclone coming for you," she laughed.
