Looking forward to a fashionable new you in 2014
COMFORT is chic, elegance is in and the outlook for fashions in 2014 is bright.
This year's wardrobe promises to be an excellent one with a more subtle take on trends and the new "it" colour - as picked by Pantone - Radiant Orchid (a purple hue with pink and fushia understones), complementing most complexions.
The Pre-Fall designer collections show that fashion is moving in an easier, more relaxed direction with suits cut on the slouchy side and soft sweaters teamed with dressy skirts.
Crop tops are moving towards becoming boxier, perfect for pairing with higher waisted pants. And the crop top trend is also travelling south with cropped culottes sure to hit shelves come fall.
Other trends included mixed plaids, color-blocking, and skirts with slits or assymetrical hemlines.
The easiest way to sort out your 2014 wardrobe is by buying one or two items from local stores that freshens your look and then pairing these purchases with your staples.
One local store that can help you with your update without breaking the bank is Saltt Clothing.
The store is currently having a huge sale, with a selection of clothes reduced by 50% and 30% off all sleepwear, shoes, jewellery, handbags, wallets and fascinators.
Manager Kayla Marshall said they had started receiving beautiful new stock to help residents get ready for winter and will also be showcasing plenty of race wear in 2014, as well as a range of stunning Bariano gowns for formal events.
"Navy, lime and red seem to be big colours for winter this year, as well as leather-look pieces, ie. skirts, tights, bomber jackets," Kayla said.
Saltt Clothing is also debuting fashion-forward label Nude this year, which do amazing boot and heels in leathers and suedes.
New trends are also hitting the shelves at Divine Avenue. Store manager Sam Taylor said they were getting new stock weekly (showcased on their Facebook and Instagram pages).
She said playsuits were still a strong trend, following on from their popularity in 2013.
"At the moment we are loving the colourful print playsuits which make such a statement, they can be dressed up and dressed down for an easy transition from day to night," Sam said.
Skorts are another popular item and Sam said they provide the perfect addition to spice up any wardrobe.
"They offer the feminine look of a skirt with the comfort of shorts making them the best of both worlds."
As for accessories, it is predicted ingenious concepts will leave consumers with enigmatic, surreal and tribal stories to tell in 2014.
Locally, people can visit Lovisa for trend-focused ranges.
Their collection "Evil Eyes" (as pictured) showcases a beautiful mix of blues, greens and burnished gold that is sure to spice up any outfit.
Geometry, fringes and tribal designs are all statement-making trends bringing accessories into the limelight.
- There is quietness to the spring and pre-fall collections of 2014, with a rainbow of soft pastels sure to reign in 2014, rather than glowing neons.
- It was only a few short years ago that we welcomed asymmetrical cuts into our lives, but they're hear to stay in 2014 (check out this trend in Divine Avenue's offerings, as pictured).
- Contrasting collars featured on several SS'14 runway shows. If you are feeling really daring as the weather cools, place a light patterned sweater over a printed collared shirt to embrace the trend in all its glory.
