Long break for Central ahead of local derby
SOCCER: Central FC will ramp up training over the next few weeks as they wait for its next CQ Premier League game on May 19.
The black and white played out a 2-2 draw with Bluebirds in Round 5 last weekend with Jayden Clark snaring a brace at Rockhampton's Webber Park.
With the CQPL having a full-round bye this weekend due to the Labour Day long weekend and Central reviving a bye in Round 6, the side won't play again until the local derby against Clinton - three weeks since its last match.
Central coach Joel Maudsley said his side would increase training before the Sun Valley Oval showdown in order to keep fitness levels in check and to rest niggling injuries.
"We had a number of players playing injured so this also gives us time to get them back up to 100 per cent fitness by the next game,” he said.
Central currently sit fourth on the CQPL ladder after one win, two losses and a draw.
Maudsley has been happy with Central's start to the season, but said his side need to be more ruthless when capitalising on positive starts.
Central led Bluebirds 1-0 after Clark scored the opener in after the fifth minute. minutes.
The visitors held the lead twice against Bluebirds, but had to settle for a draw after Liam McLean's 79th-minute equaliser.
"It's been a good start and we have progressed a lot,” Maudsley said.
”Some of the other teams have games in hand so although I'm happy with the overall result, we really need to convert our good starts and finish games off strongly.”
