Locals the backbone of illegal drug trade in Gladstone
GLADSTONE police have found locals to be more involved with the underground drug scene than the fly-in, fly-out workforce.
Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Luke Peachey said while there was a "good mix" of people who had been charged for drug use, the last three suspected drug lab cases involved locals.
"I think there is a good mix of people who have been charged (for drug use) who are local and new to town," Det Snr Sgt Peachey said.
"But all those drug labs were local people in Gladstone."
The claim comes after a house was raided in relation to a suspected hydroponic drug lab at the River Ranch Estate in Calliope on Monday night.
Nine cannabis plants and hydroponic lamps were seized at the scene.
A man has been taken in for questioning, but no charges have been laid.
Det Snr Sgt Peachey said thorough policing led to the discovery of the suspected drug labs.
"Our policing in Gladstone has always been vigilant, and we don't like to think Gladstone has a greater or lesser problem with drugs than any other town in Queensland," Det Snr Sgt Peachey said.
"With any drug offences, we deal with those offences with most urgency and investigate them thoroughly."
Rockhampton CIB Snr Sgt Det Scott Moon said his team was targeting a number of high end drug traffickers, as opposed to drug users, in Rockhampton and Gladstone.
"We are extremely proactive in the pursuit of the people making money from the drug trade," he said.
Earlier this month Queensland Police statistics revealed the number of drug offences in Gladstone have been on the rise since 2010.
Between January 1 and June 22 this year 256 drug offences have occurred in Gladstone.
Last year 395 drug offences were reported and in 2011 a total of 387 offences were recorded.
In 2010, 345 drug offences occurred in Gladstone.
