Bargains at Gladstone's new Officeworks opening
NATIONAL stationery chain Officeworks has officially rolled into Gladstone with its Hanson Rd store opening on Saturday.
Officeworks started in 1994 with a store in Melbourne and has grown to have more than 150 in Australia.
In 2007, it was bought by Wesfarmers, which also owns Coles, Bunnings, Liquorland and Kmart.
Gladstone's first Officeworks manager Chris Boyd said the grand opening went well with more than 400 sausages given away.
"We also sold a lot of iPod speakers and printers," he said.
The store even sold out of one type of laptop.
"You could see the excitement from people in the town. It went really well."
Mr Boyd has lived in Gladstone for five years and said all of his 22 staff members were local people.
"The team worked really hard and were all excited to open up the store," he said.
One of those was Nathan Eastaway, who enjoyed the pressure of a busy day.
"The day went really quickly because it was so busy," he said.
"We have 4CC radio down here and everyone was happy to come in and have a look."
Sunday afternoon there were still people around shopping and browsing.
Barbara Simms was looking over the pencil aisle.
"I'm addicted to stationery, I just love it," she said.
"There is just something about pens and pencils that I like. Especially the watercolour pencils."
Barbara was impressed with the large range of watercolour pencils but was mainly interested in her favourite brand.
"I colour in with them. Then I use a paint brush and go over it," she said.
"It's just like painting but more accurate."
Lynne Bowdler and her daughter Katie were just having a browse.
"It's a great opportunity for Gladstone people to have a look at a wide range of products," Mrs Bowdler said.
"We aren't really looking for anything, just walking around and checking it out."
Ms Bowdler said it would be good for home-based businesses to have such a large chain in Gladstone.
Officeworks on Hanson Rd is open from 8am-7pm Monday through to Wednesday, 8am-9pm on Thursday and Friday, 8am-5pm on Saturday and 10am-5pm on Sunday.
