Local baby names on trend

WIDE Bay parents are some of Queensland's hippest, with names like Ruby, Summer and Hunter among the most popular for newborns.

But as these cool kids have turned one already, Sabrina Rogers-Anderson is already looking to what's hot and what's not in names for any potential brothers and sisters in 2015.

The writer's tongue-in-cheek column about the best bogan baby names on website Kidspot sparked ire and amusement among parents across Australia earlier in 2014.

A mother herself, she told APN she was particularly unpopular with Queensland parents, with many supposedly bogan names coming from the Sunshine State.

Ms Rogers-Anderson, who consults a demographer about naming trends, expected to see a spike in royal names as a result of Prince George's birth and visit to Australia.

She said that although many people found inspiration from the names celebrities and royals gave their children, it often took years before those names were accepted and evolved into trends.

Ms Rogers-Anderson also expected vintage names such as Charlotte and Ruby to remain popular, along with surnames used as given names, such as Parker and Harper.

None of her top 10 bogan names for boys and girls, which included Holden, Cruz, Cheyenne, Mercedes and Skylah, made an appearance in Wide Bay's lists.

With Queensland's births, deaths and marriages registry unable to collate 2014's top 10 names yet, we can only go by 2013's list, where Ruby, Hunter and Summer find themselves.

Wide Bay mums and dads did not seem to have a preference for a particular genre of names, with hip names such as Jaxon and traditional ones such as Oliver and Thomas popular.

For their daughters, they preferred vintage ones such as Charlotte, Amelia, Isabella and Olivia.
