LNP campaigner’s vile slurs against Labor MP

A SERIAL Facebook pest working on the LNP campaign in several shocking posts has accused Gaven MP Meaghan Scanlon of using her intellectually disabled brother to build her profile and branded her a Labor "slut".

Photographs provided by the ALP confirm the older LNP volunteer has been working for candidate Kirsten Jackson, appearing at roadside campaigning.

He was one of a handful of volunteers dressed in blue LNP shirts attending pre-poll voting at the Nerang booth on Monday.

Ms Scanlon is attempting to secure a second term as the only Labor MP on the Gold Coast in one of the most marginal seats in the State. Her current margin is 0.7%.

In Facebook posts which included the pages of local community groups, the LNP volunteer wrote: "She leans whichever the Labor wind is blowing and relies on the sympathy vote of her childhood and challenged brother."

In another rant on Facebook about federal and state funding for highways, he wrote: "You can't trust the Polish Princess (Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk) and her LIARS (sic). GAVEN (sic) has the biggest SLUT (sic) of all."

The LNP volunteer also targeted Ms Scanlon about her relationship with Transport Minister Mark Bailey, accusing her of trying to "clutch on to power".

"Ain't love grand. What do you think," he wrote.

The LNP, on being made aware of the posts by the Bulletin, said the volunteer had been removed from the campaign and would be facing disciplinary action.

Ms Scanlon has declined to comment but Labor campaign strategists have provided at least 11 examples of offensive posts and photographs of the LNP member on the campaign trail.

In her maiden speech in Parliament, Ms Scanlon spoke for the first time about her family, having lost her father Phil, a police officer, when a teenager from cancer and how younger brother Callum had down syndrome, making it difficult to find helpful education paths for him.

Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer has called on LNP leader Deb Frecklington to take immediate action and suspend the LNP member from the party.

"These posts from a known LNP volunteer are absolutely appalling," Ms Farmer said.

"As the Leader of the LNP Deb Frecklington needs to show leadership and strongly condemn this behaviour as not acceptable in any way.

"This is not an aberration, there has been a litany of stories in the media about the LNP treating women with contempt.

"If Deb Frecklington is serious about wanting to lead this state she must stand up for Queensland women and put an end to the LNP's unacceptable culture of disrespect to women."

An LNP party spokesperson told the Bulletin: "There must be zero tolerance for harassment in any way, shape or form - online or in real life. The posts were completely unacceptable and he has been removed from the campaign.

"They do not reflect the morals and values of the party. The party is taking action and he will face a disciplinary process."
