Real estate team takes steps towards good health

THEY'RE competitive by nature and taking friendly rivalry to a whole new level.

The LJ Hooker Gladstone team has just started its One Step 2015 Challenge - a new venture that aims to increase mobility in a normally sedentary job.

Going head to head are four teams, 28 people, given just five weeks to get into ship shape.

Local entrepreneur, athlete and life coach Michelle Que has put together this program for the team, not only as a team building activity but to increase awareness of having a healthier and more active lifestyle.

"Being happy and healthy isn't necessarily about fad diets and boot camps," she said.

"It's about small changes that we can make to our lifestyles inside and outside of work that can make a big difference both as a team and individually, and ultimately make us happier and more productive both in our work and personal lives."

The directors of L J Hooker Gladstone, Mark Spearing and Tony Lloyd-Jones, have been pleased with the engagement so far.

"Given the busy and fast-paced real estate environment our team work within its great see such a successful group of local people enjoying coming to work and serving the community we live in," Mr Spearing said.

"It's a win-win for everyone - including the environment."

Sales Manager Louisa Lanyon said the friendly yet competitive challenge would work by splitting the office into four randomly drawn teams.

"Each team has a Garmin Vivofit and every day a different team member is in charge of wearing the device and getting as many steps as possible to add to the team tally for the week," she said.

"There are both team and individual challenges along the way but at the end of the day there will only be one winner."

The Green team will be led by Nicole Butler, Purple by Jessica Ney and leading the Reds is Louisa Lanyon.

Ms Lanyon said she expected some challenges along the way but invited people to stay up to date with their progress and journeys over the next five weeks by checking out the LJ Hooker Gladstone Facebook page.

Tips to keep active in your job:

  •  Walking across the hall to talk to a co-worker instead of sending an email
  •  Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  •  Parking your car further away from the entrance
  •  Taking a longer, roundabout way to your desk
