Little athlete competes at first state event this weekend

COREY Liaropoulos has grand ambitions for a nine-year-old. The little athlete will get his first taste of competing at a state level this weekend.

Corey, who has five events lined up, will be joined by four other members of Gladstone Athletics Club who are also competing at the IGA State Championships in Cairns for the first time.

They are part of a talented team of 13 from the club.

Corey, who also plays football and touch football, started with the Gladstone Athletics Club about six to seven months ago.

"Just to try and keep me fit and try to get me into sport a bit more," he said of the decision.

So far athletics has complemented his overall sporting performance.

"Football helps a lot because we do a lot of exercise and running activities," he said.

With his speed already up to scratch, qualifying for the 70m, 100m, 200m and 400m events this weekend as well as in shot put, it is clear that with further technique coaching, Corey has incredible potential.

His favourite event is the 100m sprint.

"I've gone to about five different carnivals and I've gone quite well in all of them," he said.

Happy with his performance at the regional carnival in Bundaberg last month, other highlights from his time in athletics include the chance to stand on the podium and receive first place overall for a practice carnival in Bundaberg and second overall for a practice carnival in Gladstone.

Ahead of the state championships Corey has been training twice a week in an effort to keep making personal bests.

He took a second off his time last week for the 70m event. The well-spoken youngster is taking a relaxed approach to the event and his future in the sport.

"I basically just want to try and make new friends and try my best," he said.

"I'm just going to get better at what I like."

Corey said he was excited that there was such a large contingent travelling to Cairns, a sentiment echoed by the Gladstone Athletics Club president John Sherriff.

There will be a 50-50 mix of track and field competitors from the club at the event.

Gladstone reps are Alyssa Rabnott, Caleb Wilson, Corey Liaropoulos, Greer Sherriff, Jaidyn Tibbits, Jason Stanhope, Mack Geiger, Maddison Sherriff, Ryan Mansfield, Savannah McCann, Seth Gould, Tana Martin and Tallis Stanhope.
