LISTEN: Blood shortage as cold and flu plagues CQ

THE Gladstone Blood Service needs 194 donations in the next two weeks to help combat the national O negative shortage.

Cold and flu symptoms have forced many donors to cancel their appointments, which has caused the shortage.

Currently in Australia there is two days worth supply, which is half of what is needed.

Here he explains why there is a national shortage on O negative:

Australia Red Cross Blood service central Queensland relations officer Barry Lynch said both Gladstone and Rockhampton services had available appointments in the next two weeks.

"We are seeing a fair few cancellations coming through (at Central Queensland) or people ringing up or not attending their appointments because of cold and flu," he said.

"Donating blood makes a massive difference, you really do save lives."

If you would like to donate phone 13 14 95.
