LISTEN: Storms to hit Gladstone region this afternoon
THE BUREAU of Meteorology is telling Gladstone residents to brace for thunderstorms and rain this afternoon.
Heavy clouds from a surface trough which are circling Gladstone this morning are expected to bring showers.
But BoM's expert forecaster Lauren Pattie said a series of "upper systems", currently heading our way from out west, will likely bring showers, rain and thunderstorms to the Gladstone area.
"In the afternoon, with the help of those upper systems we can see some showers and storms about as well," she said.
"For the Gladstone area you can expect some showers, rain and thunderstorms about today."
Ms Pattie said the showers and rain are likely to be widespread across the south of the region, from just north of Bundaberg to Gladstone.
The rain is long overdue, with BoM reporting that Gladstone recorded its hottest and second driest April on record.
With just three days left to go of April, Gladstone had received just 2.2mm for the month, well below the 48.6mm average.
The average temperature jumped from 29 degrees to 29.3.
