Lions defender ruled out of opening round

AFL: Brisbane Lions recruit Jack Frost will have to wait a week to make his proper debut for his new side after copping a one-week suspension.

for his sling tackle on Gold Coast's Brandon Matera in the third quarter of their JLT Community Series match.

The former Magpie faced immediate remonstration from Matera's teammates, who were unhappy with the execution of the tackle.

The ban is in line with recent AFL policy in which the head is sacrosanct. It was judged as careless conduct with medium impact to the head.

However Hawk Liam Shiels has avoided suspension after the MRP ruled his elbow to the back of Darcy Lang's head was only worthy of a $1000 fine. It was graded as careless conduct with low impact to the head.

The newly anointed Hawthorn vice-captain was one of four players fined with Kade Stewart (rough conduct on Andrew Mackie), Will Schofield (rough conduct on Nathan Wilson) and Jarrad Waite (kneeing Harrison Marsh) also copping fines.
