Lifesaving helps Tannum duo forge new friendship
FAIRLY quiet characters in front of the camera, Ben Dollery and Hayden Sharpe became more outwardly adventurous when charging into the water and onto their boards at Tannum Sands Nippers.
Not knowing each other until Hayden began three years ago, the boys are now best friends on the beach.
Both boys have a similar story as to why they began in the Nippers at Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club, initially lured into the sport by the participation of siblings.
"I started three years ago because my sisters did it," Hayden said. "I like the board best, because I am a good paddler."
Ben on the other hand had a brother already heading to the beach each Sunday, and it was natural for him to tag along and begin himself.
"I have been doing it about five years," Ben said. "I also play soccer for BITS, in midfield and defence."
At nine years old, Ben is not too serious at this stage about competing in the surf, just enjoying the sport with his friends.
"I pretty much just like catching waves," he laughed.
Both Ben and Hayden, eight years old, will have competition come to them this weekend, when Tannum Sands holds its leg of the 4 point carnival for the Northern Branch.
The two best friends will compete against Emu Park and Yeppoon as the series wraps up on their local beach.
