Motorcycle racer 'critical' after concrete barrier crash

THE Toowoomba based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter has airlifted a man in his 60s who was critically injured yesterday when he collided with a concrete barrier while racing in a motorcycle event.

The airlift was one of two missions by the Toowoomba crew over the weekend where patients were transported from regional hospitals to major Brisbane hospitals.

The aeromedical crew was tasked to Stanthorpe yesterday where the crew attended to the Gold Coast man who was injured when racing his motorcycle on a track at Carnell Raceway.

It is believed the rider was racing around the track when he somehow lost control and collided with the concrete barrier.

He suffered serious multiple trauma injuries and was initially transported by road ambulance to Stanthorpe Hospital.

After examining the patient, doctors decided he required specialist treatment and he was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

In it's second weekend mission, the Toowoomba based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter crew today flew to Miles Hospital before dawn to airlift a teenage male who had suffered minor burns to his face and hands after an accelerant was thrown on a campfire close to where he was standing.

He was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Burns Unit in a stable condition.

2016-17 was a record year for LifeFlight for lifesaving missions with its aeromedical crews, community helicopters and Air Ambulance jets performing a record 5,252 missions throughout Queensland and around the world.
