Life goes on for golfer after dad’s death

SITTING sitting at 131 on the PGA Tour rankings, American professional Billy Hurley III (pictured) is among a host of players needing a good finish at this week's Wyndham Championship to be part of the lucrative FedEx Cup play-offs.

As well as keeping their Tour cards for next season, the top 125 after the Wyndham will earn a place in the play-offs which start next week with The Barclays in New Jersey.

Hurley is playing under more pressure than most, however. On Tuesday he attended the funeral of his father who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head a week ago.

Hurley, who made a tearful appeal for information about his father's whereabouts during the recent Quicken Loans National tournament, said he hoped playing would help him deal with the pain.

"Obviously, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't 131 in the FedExCup and needed to play decent to keep my card," Hurley said. "If I was 100th, I wouldn't be here. So I mean, it's just part of life. Life goes on. The job goes on."

Several Australian players also need a good result to get into the top 125.

PGA Championship winner Jason Day (2), Steve Bowditch (21), Marc Leishman (54), Matt Jones (54) and John Senden (81) aren't playing this week, while Adam Scott (91) is teeing it up to improve his ranking.

Geoff Ogilvy (148) and Aaron Baddeley (152) can get into the top 125 with a top-four finish while Greg Chalmers (172) and Robert Allenby (183) need to finish in the top two to be safe.
