LGAQ files an appeal against decision about investor rates

A SUPREME Court decision forbidding councils from charging rates based on who lives at the property has been appealed by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).

Justice Duncan McMeekin ruled it was illegal for the Mackay Regional Council to charge investors an extra $200 on their yearly rates bill last month.

The decision also has ramifications for 19 other councils around the state that also charge the investor levy.

Lawyers filed the appeal yesterday a LGAQ spokesperson said.
