OPINION: Let's not start laughing about break-ups

I MAY be labelled the fun police on this one, but I don't see the humour in the publicity-driven announcement that Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog are splitting up.

Yes I know it's all in the name of getting fun publicity for their next production, but should we be promoting that it's just normal for anyone and everyone to split up.

We are so flippant these days when we talk about broken relationships and families getting torn apart.

Yes, maybe I have gone cartoon crazy on this, but the way the publicity gag has been played out hits a raw nerve.

Only a few years ago, relationship break-ups were spoken about in whispers - it now seems that some people claim these as trophies.

I agree that people who don't get along should not stay together for "the sake of the children".

I have seen just a few families that have split actually keep it together, show civility to each other and turn what was once a marriage into a good friendship.

It's difficult to turn what was a very personal relationship into one where you have to embrace your partner's next love as a great mate to try to help your children adapt.

Our recent story and follow-up letters on the family law court bias against men revealed the true pain many feel and how lovers can quickly become hate-filled enemies.

So instead of making fun over relationship break-ups, we should see them for what they really are. It is a time when people need good friends and support.

Depression that leads to suicide is too often attached to these times in some people's lives.
