Time for the annual clean up of our environment

AUSTRALIANS make a lot of mess; in fact, we produce the second highest amount of waste per person in the world.

Clean Up Australia Day is the country's largest community-run environmental event, working to rectify such a reputation.

On any given day, Liz Laxton will visit the foreshore upon starting work at Curtis Ferry Services, and will be greeted by litter.

"I visit the waterfront daily and just sift through plastic and rubbish that has washed up," she said.

"Clean Up Australia Day is a vital event. We are taking three large skip bins given to us by council over to Facing Island and hoping they will return full."

Our tendencies to live disposable lives are consuming more than just our wallets, egos and waste services, but our environment too.

On March 2, you can participate in caring for our environment by registering with any of the listed sites.

Those who choose to volunteer on Facing Island will not only be able to gather litter with a beachside view, but can enjoy a 10% discount on their ferry fare.
