Boonah farmer Syd Haag crowned Ekka Legend

THERE is no doubt Syd Hagg is a legend and now he has the title to prove it.

The well-known and respected Boonah farmer has been named this year's Ekka Legend, joining an illustrious list of winners in the process.

Mr Hagg has been a mainstay at the fruit and vegetable pavilion for more than six decades.

He said he was first introduced to the state's premier agricultural show as a 16-year-old and had never looked back.

"This will be my 67th straight Ekka," he said.

"My grandfather and father used to come to the Ekka and now my children and their children attend each year.

"It is really about keeping the tradition alive."

Mr Hagg, whose pumpkin and vegetable display was placed second overall, said he had seen many changes over his years at the Ekka.

He said the Ekka had provided him with a lifetime of memories and friendships.

"My son designed our display and it took about a week to knock together," he said.

"To me, coming to the Ekka is now like a hobby.

"But I have always tried to do my best and showcase the agriculture industry along the way."

Mr Hagg has created more than 30 different types of pumpkins over the years but there was one in particular that stood out.

"I am the creator of the Hagg's pumpkin which is a cross between the butternut and pawpaw pumpkins," he said.

"It is pretty tasty I must say.

"God willing I will be back next year and might have another variety up my sleeve by then."
