Legal challenge against Adani’s Carmichael coal mine

MACKAY Conservation Group has launched legal action against the Abbott Government's approval of Adani's Carmichael coal mine in court.

Premier Newman has put development of the Galilee Basin at the top of his list in a bid for re-election.

The Mackay Conservation Group is calling for the mine's approval to be rendered invalid on the grounds that Environment Minister Greg Hunt failed to take into account the impact of carbon emissions from burning coal produced by the mine.

The Australian Greens have congratulated Mackay Conservation Group for standing up for the Great Barrier Reef and climate.

Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters said the climate impacts haven't been considered the climate impacts of the mine.

"The Abbott and Newman governments have ticked off the Southern Hemisphere's biggest coal mine in Queensland's Galilee Basin to export through the Great Barrier Reef, without even considering the climate impacts," Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters said.

"The Carmichael coal mine is set to export 60 million tonnes of coal every year, turning our Reef into a shipping super highway and dramatically increasing Australia's contribution to climate change.

"Mackay Conservation Group is rightly pointing out that the climate impacts of this mega mine on the Great Barrier Reef should have been considered under federal environment law and are taking the Abbott Government to court.

"Climate change is the biggest threat facing our Reef and it should not be treated as a highway for climate-cooking fossil fuels, which will come back to bite the Reef through ocean acidification and coral bleaching," she said.
