League rep star shining

NRLW: Gladstone Rugby League's international star Chelsea Baker's historic year of triumphs has written another page after winning the Trans-Tasman Trophy in New Zealand.

Baker played a pivotal role as fullback for the Australian Jillaroos National Rugby League side that narrowly defeated the Kiwi Ferns, 26-24 at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Playing through the pain barrier from injuries sustained during the game, Baker involved herself in try conversions and several cover defence tackles to deny her opponents game winning points.

"It really was a hard-fought game and definitely the hardest one I have ever played in," Baker said.

"The game went for a full 80 minutes instead of the usual 60 minutes and the score between both sides changed often.

"I did a groin injury early in the game and then a couple of minutes later I fractured my right thumb, so at half time it was strapped up and I took a couple of Panadol."

Baker's representative jerseys number help to tell the story of how the season had gone for 2018 with a number on the front to show how many players have been selected since the side was established.

"On my Jillaroo jersey it has 136, the State of Origin jersey has 106 and I could be the first one selected for this year's Brisbane Broncos Women's team with a number one it," she said.

Baker has a busy schedule looking after children Maddison and Quade and working part-time in the Gladstone and Callide region as a game development officer for the NRL.

Despite the NRL season winding up, game time for Baker hasn't finished yet, with a trip to Dolphin Stadium coming up.

"I have a touch football State of Origin in three weeks at Redcliffe and I hope my injuries have come good by then," she said.
