League great's warning for Dylan Napa

PAUL Vautin has warned Maroons hopeful Dylan Napa he needs to live up to the hype this season or risk disappearing from the game.

The Brisbane-born Sydney Roosters prop has long been lauded as one of the rugby league's future stars because of his hard-hitting tackling and monster figure.

But former Australian forward Vautin does not believe Napa has reached his potential just yet, particularly after last year when the Roosters finished second-last on the ladder.

Vautin said Napa took a backward step last season, away from being one of the best forwards in the game and from his Queensland aspirations.

Vautin said it was time to see more from the 24-year-old who is about to start his fifth NRL season against the Titans at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday night.

"This has to be the year because he went from being the next big thing two years ago to last year when he almost disappeared," Vautin said.

"He's got to get himself back on track. If he doesn't, he'll disappear further.

"In general the Roosters had a bad year and I think Napa was a victim of that."

Despite his challenge to the Roosters enforcer, Vautin remains a big fan of what he can do and he believes Napa could earn a spot in this year's Queensland squad.

"At his best, I would hate to be trying to tackle him or running past him," Vautin said.

"He's big, strong, he's fast and he's got skill. If he puts them all together for the Roosters, who knows what he can achieve."
