No comment on LNP leader back-up plan

THE leadership question has continued to hound the LNP, with Treasurer Tim Nicholls refusing to say whether the government had discussed other potential leaders should Premier Campbell Newman lose his seat.

Just a day after a Channel 7 ReachTel poll said Mr Newman is facing a large swing against him in his Brisbane seat of Ashgrove, Mr Nicholls would not say whether the LNP had a back-up plan.

Mr Nicholls said he had not seen any internal LNP polls on Ashgrove and maintained Mr Newman had performed well as a local member.

"I'm confident the Premier has done the work in Ashgrove, the voters in Ashgrove understand that the decision they make is going to be the same decision that's made in Clayfield, or made anywhere else throughout the state," Mr Nicholls said.

"Our view and the view that's been stressed many times by myself is that the voters of Ashgrove understand the decision they have to make. And their decision is the same decision made in any electorate."

Speaking yesterday in Cairns before cancelling a regional tour to return to Brisbane, Mr Newman stood by his work as a local member in Ashgrove.

"I've got a very strong local plan in Ashgrove. So I'm making commitments that have been put out to the community. Just the same as these MPs have been doing in this part of the world. And what I say to you again is the contest in Ashgrove is the same as the contest elsewhere in the state," Mr Newman said.

"I talk to Queenslanders, and I talk to people in my electorate. And what I'm starting to hear more of is that Queenslanders understand the clear choice."

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said she expected the Ashgrove result would be close.

"Out at Ashgrove I think it's going to be a lot tighter than what everyone else is saying out there. I've been speaking to Kate (Jones) on a regular basis and she knows just how tight it's going to be and it's going to go right down to the wire," Ms Palaszczuk said.
