Lawrence Springborg rules out tilt at Maranoa

State opposition leader Lawrence Springborg has ruled himself out of the running for the seat of Maranoa, a day after sitting MP Bruce Scott said he would not contest the next election.

Mr Springborg said today said he remained "deeply committed" to representing the electorate of Southern Downs and would not be standing for the federal seat of Maranoa.

"Given my role in forming the LNP, I have passionately and proudly served as the Member for Southern Downs and my commitment to this region should never be underestimated," Mr Springborg said.

"My priority is and will continue to be representing the Southern Downs electorate to the best of my ability and returning the LNP to Government."

Mr Springborg paid tribute to Mr Scott who announced his retirement after 25 years as the member for Maranoa.

"In his career Bruce has always been a gentleman to deal with whether he was representing his constituents or in his roles as Deputy Speaker, Minister for Veterans' Affairs or the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence," he said.

"Bruce always put the interests of his constituents first and many people in the Maranoa electorate will attest to his professional and respectful manner."

Mr Springborg thanked Mr Scott for his friendship and ongoing support.

"Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed working together to get the best outcome for the people living in the Darling Downs region," he said.

"I wish Bruce, his wife Joan and their family all the very best for whatever the future holds."

With Mr Springborg declaring himself out of the running, the opportunity is there for one of Surat Basin's mayors to nominate.

Maranoa Regional Council mayor Robert Loughnan unsuccessfully stood for LNP preselection for state seat of Warrego in 2015, now held by Anne Leahy while Western Downs Regional Council mayor Ray Brown stood for preselection to inherit Barnaby Joyce's Senate seat in 2013, now held by Barry O'Sullivan.

Maranoa is one of the safest seats in Australia and the LNP is expected to choose its candidate in the next month.
