Law catches up with man after 5 years on run

AFTER being shot at by shady acquaintances five years ago, John Edwards decided to leave Queensland to head to the Northern Territory - despite the fact that he was due to face court for several offences.

Six months ago Edwards returned to Queensland but made no effort to hand himself in to police, Maryborough Magistrates Court heard.

But the long arm of the law finally caught up with him this week when he was allegedly caught driving while unlicensed, and the older charges were discovered.

The Maryborough man appeared before the court while in custody on Monday and Magistrate John Smith quickly disabused him of any notion than he might be allowed out on bail.

Defence lawyer Travis George said he had been instructed to apply anyway.

The court heard the offences Edwards had been charged with were committed while he was involved with drugs, but in the five years since had turned his life around.

Mr George said he was living in Maryborough now and had no intention of leaving.

Mr George said his client had made the decision to leave after he was shot at as a result of his involvement in the drug scene and realised he might be killed if he didn't immediately leave the area.

But Mr Smith decided to refuse bail, saying it was too great a risk that Edwards might fail to appear.

The case was adjourned until May 31.
