'Larger than life' Alan Bond dies, age 77

BUSINESS man Alan Bond has died in Perth hospital at the age of 77, three days after heart valve surgery.

His family have told the media he passed away at about midday on Friday. He never regained consciousness after his surgery on Tuesday.

The West Australian business man a controversial figure, claimed a hero by some after bankrolling challenges for the America's Cup and also being jailed for siphoning off $1.2 billion into his ailing Bond Corporation.

Mr Bond's three children - Perth business identities John and Craig Bond and real estate agent Jody Fewster gave a statement to the media on Friday afternoon.

"Dad was a larger than life character who started with nothing and did so much," said John.

"He really did experience the highs and lows of life.

"To us, however, he was just Dad - a father who tried his best to be the best dad he could.

"He was also Pop to eight grandchildren and had yet to receive a nickname for his first great grandchild.

"Mum and dad were always great soulmates who never broke their connection even though he could be very infuriating to her.

"He also loved Diana very much and missed her greatly in these past few years.

"Dad was vitally interested in everything that we did with with that ever enquiring mind of his. We only half joked to our friends that you had to have a five-year business plan ready when you first met him.
