The young gun competed in the 17km prone event, which started at Cloudbreak reef.
He was among a leading pack of four coming into Musket Cove and in the final push to the line, New Zealand's Sam Sherwood acellarated to take the honours, 11 seconds ahead of ex-Mooloolaba ironman Matt Poole, with Lansdown another six seconds adrift.
"It was a good battle the whole way,” Sherwood told ISA,
"Anyone could have won it off that last buoy.”
It's believed the two Australians were ill on Wednesday night.
Lansdown also claimed second place in the technical race at Cloudbreak on Wednesday.
He finished behind Poole in that format.
