Clock ticking after community arts centre is told to leave

COMMUNITY Arts on Goondoon has just over two months to find a new premises after it received a notice to leave its current building by the end of March.

Initially the group was given a deadline of January 31, but it was able to negotiate an extra two months and is now appealing to the community for leasing offers.

From humble beginnings in March 2010, the former Target storage shed at 89 Goondoon St was refurbished by volunteers into a creative workspace including three galleries, a gift shop, print room and a large workshop.

Media co-ordinator Kristel Kelly said it was disappointing the group would have to start again, considering the amount of work that went into the existing space, however they were keeping positive in the search for a new space.

"We're willing to try to succeed in any way we can because we know how important it is to keep the creative community alive in Gladstone," she said.

"We admit that the likelihood of getting a space where we can have all our projects in the one building is highly unlikely, so we're prepared to spread out over several spaces."

Sharing a venue with other art groups and leasing vacant shop fronts to display art works are among the options the group is considering, however finding a space to hold weekly art classes is the top priority.

With no current sponsors, Community Arts on Goondoon is funded completely through money received from art sales, membership and workshop fees - a situation that is not helped by the group's uncertain future.

"We're looking to create a sponsorship program but that is difficult while in the process of moving because we don't know what we'll be offering," Mrs Kelly said.

Anyone who can help Community Arts on Goondoon with leasing, sponsorship or volunteering should email creativegladstone@gmail. com.
