CQ politicians rejoice after road safety tribunal abolished

9.40AM: CENTRAL Queensland Federal MPs have rejoiced after a tribunal was abolished in Federal Parliament last night.

Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry, who had rallied with CQ truckies outside Parliament House yesterday, posted about the news on Facebook last night:

"This evening the Senate also voted to abolish the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal," she said.

"Labor and the union's RSRT is now history."

The RSRT was abolished last night in parliament about 7.30pm:

5PM MONDAY: CAPRICORNIA MP Michelle Landry joined a contingent of Central Queensland truckies yesterday morning, rallying against Labor's Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal around Parliament House in Canberra.

Ms Landry went on to speak in Parliament calling for RSRT to be abolished after the tribunal imposed several regulations on the industry.

Rockhampton owner-driver Dave Duckworth (Duck Transport) and Central Queensland-based president of the National Road Freighters Association Tony Hopkins (Hopkins Brothers Transport) were among Capricornia truckies in Canberra.

"The RSRT is a tool of the Transport Workers Union which is manoeuvring to control the industry and drive mum and dad operators out of business," Ms Landry said yesterday.

"The tribunal must be axed, and that's what I'm fighting for on the floor of parliament today. Two independent studies recommend it to be abolished, showing that the regulations imposed by the tribunal will cost the economy a net value of $2.3 billion."

Ms Landry said the government had set up a special temporary hotline through the Department of Social Services to provide financial advice for owner drivers.

Owner-drivers can reach the Financial Counselling Helpline by calling 1800 007 007.
