Lady skippers hone up

SUNDAY brought perfect winter sailing conditions for those on the waters of Gladstone Harbour.

A few members of the Port Curtis Sailing Club were spotted enjoying a gentle jaunt up the harbour, raising the question that perhaps there were a few lady skippers out there honing their skills in preparation for Lady Skippers Day next weekend.

Last year the trophy was hotly contested by mixed crews, all-women crews and crews where men tried to confuse us all by dressing as women!

Experienced helming and tactics by the O’Brien family women, Hannah, Jenny and Phoebe, and dad Peter, (who was able to take instruction) won them the glory in 2009.

However, the field is open again to all ladies.

The race begins from Patsy Lee Place at 1pm on Sunday, July 4. Ladies must attend a briefing by officer of the day Lynne Campbell at the Yacht Club at 11.30am. The race will be followed by a social gathering upstairs.

Further events on the PCSC July calendar are Learn to Sail beginning July 11, weekly until September, and the Pleiades Plate weekend on July 17 and 18.
