Lack of planning augurs badly for our children's future

"PLANNING without action is futile, action without planning is fatal."

The down-home advice to plan ahead is something we all heard as children. (Usually after a forward-thinking failure saw some favourite toy, or precious household item, or particularly annoying sibling become irrevocably harmed in some way.)

The fable of forward planning seems to be on repeat in Gladstone.

Failure to forecast housing demand has seen the price blow out, and developers left playing catch-up.

The booming population saw waiting rooms bulging across our health services.

And now we hear our student population will be the next to skyrocket - forecast to jump nearly 70% by 2031.

The forward planning wisdom would be: more schools now.

The State Government reality: silence, and a 'for sale' sign on the Calliope High School site.

While failure to plan our region's education will not be actually fatal, the bright futures of our children might live or die by it.
