Labor warns against welfare cuts

OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten says Labor will examine the Federal Government's proposed extension of its mutual obligation concept but warned against cutting payments for welfare recipients.

"We're up for a discussion about how you break the cycle of poverty,” he said.

"But some of the ways in which you break the cycle of poverty don't involve going after the poorest in our community and cutting their funding,” he said.

On Tuesday, Social Services Minister Christian Porter described he policy of mutual obligation as "utterly outstanding”.
