L-platers cop nasty abuse
LEARNING to drive is tough enough.
But it's even tougher when abuse is being hurled at every turn.
M&M Driver Trainers invited The Observer along on a driving lesson yesterday to witness firsthand the turmoil and abuse learners cop on Gladstone's roads.
Izzy McGrath is 17.
She got her learner's licence in May and yesterday was only her seventh time behind the wheel.
Her instructor Mel Mayers said Izzy couldn't drive at all when she first started lessons.
It was only her second lesson with Mel when she got a real taste of how learners are treated on the city's roads.
She stalled the car at a roundabout, but before she even had a chance to restart the car a work ute travelling behind sped up beside them, over double lines just to get past.
Occurrences such as this are commonplace in Gladstone.
Throughout the one hour lesson, Izzy copped some serious abuse.
She was tailgated constantly and other drivers showed no courtesy.
