WATCH: Koala and joey hit by car doing well after surgery
AUSTRALIA Zoo's latest celebrity animal family are going strong after life saving surgery.
Lizzy the koala underwent surgery after she was hit by a car on the Warrego Highway in Coominya.
Her joey Phantom, was unscathed, but Lizzy suffered facial trauma and a collapsed lung.
Their story has captured the hearts of animal lovers around the world as images emerged of Phantom clinging to Lizzy during surgery.
The post on their Facebook page was shared more than 5,000 times and attracted almost 10,000 'Likes'.
Phantom is only six months old and too young to be without mum, so zoo staff let him stick around during the surgery.
Today, Australia Zoo confirmed that Lizzy is recovering well after her operation and is happy to have her baby back in her arms.
She's been given antibiotics and is improving every day in care at the hospital.
Phantom is putting on weight as well, which zoo staff say is a great sign for the health of both mother and baby.
They anticipate the happy little family will be ready to return to the wild soon.
