Local producers' beef too expensive, butcher says

A LOCAL butcher says beef is still the most popular meat he sells, but believes local producers are too expensive to source produce from.

The revelation comes as falling cattle prices hit farmers hard, with a 50 per cent drop over the past 18 months causing pain in the Gladstone region.

Butcher Nathan Lynn, from Tannum Meats, said beef was "definitely the most popular meat. You get so many cuts from it".

"It's more consistent with beef I guess; you know what you're getting."

While beef had reduced in price over the past few years, it hadn't been noticeably cheaper in the past year.

"It goes up and down," he said.

Mr Lynn said Tannum Meats had bought beef from a local producer for a while, but had found it too expensive and less convenient than the Brisbane market, where most of the shop's produce is now sourced.

"The cheapest beef is from elsewhere," he said. "We tried to support locals, but it was too dear.

"A local bloke was getting it slaughtered... but it wasn't worth our while."
