King of red meat says Gladstone will be in world's spotlight

SAM Kekovich may have "closed his eyes" the first time he visited Gladstone, but insists he took a glimpse when he returned a few years later.

"I have been to Gladstone twice. The first time was with Mal Meninga with a footy tour and the next time I was visiting a resort," Sam said.

Today the national "Lambassador" will spend his third visit in the boomtown speaking to guests of the Gladstone Region Future Summit.

Known for his dazzling AFL career and outspoken antics promoting red meat, Sam said Gladstone had a lot going for tourism.

"North Queensland is the quintessential Australia," he said.

"Queenslanders are generous people and don't take themselves too seriously.

"In a few years Gladstone won't have to do a great deal to be recognised, with developments on Curtis Island sure to cast the town into the world's spotlight."

Sam arrived in Gladstone last night and will spend today at the summit before leaving tonight.
