Kerber caps rise to No.1 with title

TENNIS: Angelique Kerber has confirmed her new No.1 ranking with a three-set win over Czech Karolina Pliskova in the US Open final.

Kerber (pictured), 28, is the first German to win women's crown at Flushing Meadows since Steffi Graf in 1996.

Her 6-3 4-6 6-4 victory in New York added to her success over Serena Williams in the Australian Open in January.

Pliskova's defeat of Williams in the last four had already ensured Kerber's rise to the top of the rankings, which are released today.

"All my dreams came true today and I'm just trying to enjoy the moment,” she said.

"It's incredible. I'm standing here with a second grand slam trophy and it means so much to me.”

The US Open final was Kerber's third appearance in the decider of a major tournament in 2016.

Pliskova, 24, went on to the final on an 11-match winning streak, including a victory over Kerber in last month's Cincinnati final.

The Czech struggled with nerves in her first grand slam final and made 17 unforced errors in the first set.

She did better in the second and struck 17 winners.

At 3-1 ahead in the decider, it looked as if Pliskova would cause another upset.

Kerber showed great fight, however, before Pliskova fell 0-40 behind at 4-5 and blazed a forehand wide on match point.
