Ken’s labour of love all shipshape for maiden voyage

KEN Cameron is not a boat craftsman by trade.

But he managed to build a beautiful and seaworthy wooden surf boat in just four months.

The 70-year-old Coolum man launched the western red cedar timber boat on Friday with the support of a dozen of his mates.

Mr Cameron, a school bus driver, said he had come up with the idea 12 months ago and decided to take on the project over winter.

He said the vessel was not the Titanic but it had taken plenty of work and perseverance to come together.

"I heard of a fellow who had a one man surf boat and I thought that is not a bad idea," Mr Cameron said.

"I got the information about how to build it from books, not on the internet. I also got some tips from people who are builders.

"I really enjoyed working with my hands and working out how to do things.

"Making it was a pleasure."

Mr Cameron said he intended to keep the vessel in calmer waters, despite a successful first outing in Coolum.

"It survived one trip," he said.

"I will use it to go fishing in the dam or river - where it is calmer.

"However, I might take it out in the surf again - but the shore break is bad at Coolum."

The Coolum Surf Lifesaving Club member said he currently had no plans to undertake a massive project like this again.

"I don't know if I would do it again or even anything similar," Mr Cameron said. "Maybe if I come up with another good idea."
