Karl's comments don't offend Gladstone... much

GLADSTONE residents seem to have taken Today Show host Karl Stefanovic's comments about Gladstone yesterday with a grain of salt.

Gladstone was mentioned on the show over rumours that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were looking at buying Turtle Island, which sits in Gladstone harbour.

Stefanovic repeatedly referred to the Boyne Smelter and the "fantastic industry" around Gladstone.

In a poll on The Observer's website, 57% of people agreed that "Gladstone is an industry town. Why deny it?"

Five per cent indicated they didn't think the comments were that bad.

However, 25% of people chose the response "There's more to Gladstone than smelters. He should get out more", while 11% were appreciative of host Lisa Wilkinson's comments that the region was a beautiful one.

On The Observer's Facebook page, opinions also were mixed.

"Arrogant condescension, was less than impressed," Barbara Sawtell wrote.

"They need to come to Gladstone and see how beautiful the harbour and surrounds are still," Patricia Ashe commented.

Tatiana Buslotsaiyangina commented that Gladstone was looking much better these days.

"It is progressive and looking more modern," she said.

"When I arrived here in the early 80s it looked like a hick town. People were much nicer at the time though."

Danny Noy wasn't fazed by the comments.

"Seriously, people that live here say worse things about the town we live in," he wrote.
