Junior golf sign-on offers kids chance to try something new
GOLF: Gladstone Golf Club is holding its junior sign-on this Sunday offering children a great opportunity to try out a different sport.
Gladstone Golf Club committee member Derran Corke, whose son Declan is a rising star of the game, said the club offers different memberships based on age and skill.
"Kids can pretty much start when they're five or six years of age," Corke said.
"It's good for kids of that age to learn the rules and the etiquette of golf and that also helps them when they get older.
"You can spend as little or as much as you want - if you play locally or go to some different events in Central Queensland it's quite cost effective.
"A lot of them don't travel when they're young doing three and six holes, when they get up to the nine holes it's a bit more competitive.
"In our zone we also have 13-hole juniors as well, obviously it's a big step up going from nine to 18 holes, so 13 holes is a good transition for kids as well.
"There's obviously a lot of fundamentals with the game, but most kids who play tennis or have some form of hand-eye co-ordination in any sport will do quite well in golf."
