Board the HMS Endeavour
FORGET Master Chef, the real Cook experience is headed to Gladstone.
An exact replica of Captain Cook's HMV Endeavour is set to make its maiden 13-month voyage around Australia next year, and Gladstone is among the 18 ports at which the ship will drop anchor.
The ship, built by the Endeavour Foundation and gifted to the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), departs Sydney on April 15, 2011, and reaches Gladstone on May 19, where it will act as a floating exhibition from May 21 to 26.
Up to 40 people can register as members of the voyage crew for each leg of the journey, where they will experience 18th Century sailing first hand.
“They learn everything there is to learn about maintaining a vessel like that so it's quite exciting,” ANMM's Trish Pascuzzo said.
“They get to sail 18th Century style, they'll sleep in hammocks and live like the original crew with Cook.”
The 12-day leg from Gladstone to Townsville costs between $3500 and $7000.
