Jetskis in drizzle
GLADSTONE, expect rain on May 8 and 9. Every time Central Queensland Personal Watercraft Club president Brett Harris plans a jetski event Mother Nature makes sure competitors don’t just ride on top of the water.
Now two wet days from two events, Harris has his fingers crossed for better conditions come the third event in May.
Despite the drizzly conditions the weekend’s tournament continued.
Due to the early wet weather many competitors had not trialled the course previous to starting heats, making for a slow start.
As the day went on seconds dropped from times faster than the rain from the clouds.
But Harris admitted when the odd downpour came “it deadset felt like someone was throwing darts at you when riding”.
The event organiser finished the heats in top position with 120 points but “bodgied” out in the final to allow Hayden Brown, Robert Brown and Craig Buchanan to take the top three spots respectively.
Harris said all competitors thought Robert Brown had the win but his son Hayden snuck home on the same ski to win by less than a second.
With the exception of the weather, Harris said the event couldn’t have gone much smoother.
“It was a bloody good day,” the president said.
“I’m really impressed with how it’s coming along and how everyone pitches in and helps.”
