"IF THEY weren't there, it would have been a very different story."

Yeppoon fisherman Trevor Walters is counting his lucky stars after a quiet morning out on the water with mates took a dramatic turn yesterday.

Trevor was making his way to Great Keppel Island on his 5.5m Haines Hunter fibreglass boat to go fishing about 10.30am when, he said, things took a turn for the worse.

"We were heading out to Great Keppel Island to do some fishing behind the island and I noticed we'd started to take on some water," Trevor said.

"So we decided we better head back home, but about half-way our motor cut out and as soon as that happened the back of the boat went down.

"We had about 30 seconds to get out of the boat before it sunk."

With no time to call for help or activate his EPIRB, Trevor said, he let off a flare and hoped someone spotted it. Luckily for Trevor and his two mates two jet ski riders were close by.

"We had no time to call for help, but it was just enough time to set a flare off," he said.

"We were hanging on to our main esky from the boat and were only in the water for about two minutes.

"Luckily for us there were two guys named Axel and Lee on jet skis close by. If they weren't there it would have been a very different story," he said.

While his $7000 boat is now at the bottom of the bay, Trevor passed on his thanks to his jet ski saviours, Yeppoon Coast Guard and boat passenger Marksy.

"I'm going to have to have a beer with them to say thanks," he said.

"If it wasn't for my mate Marksy who was on the boat, it would have been a body search.

"We were stuck in the cabin and if it wasn't for his quick thinking to get us out, there would have been fatalities."

Trevor's boat trailer is now for sale.
