Jessica Watson fights child hunger

SUNSHINE Coast sailor Jessica Watson has teamed up with the United Nations to help young Australians feed less fortunate youth across the globe.

The 19-year-old in her capacity as the UN World Food Programme youth representative has joined forces with SchoolAid to encourage kids to invest in the futures of hungry children around the world.

The Kids Fighting Hunger campaign teaches primary school students about child hunger and promotes participation in the WFP's school meals programme.

After visiting remote villages and schools in the south east Asian nation of Laos last year, Ms Watson witnessed the effect of malnutrition and food deprivation on the younger generation.

"You could see they were all happy and lovely and having great fun but at the same time you couldn't tell the age of some of the kids," she said at the campaign launch in Brisbane on Tuesday.

"Some kids were way older than you thought they looked and that is because they had not been fed right over the years and suffered from malnutrition.

"And you saw that over and over again."

Ms Watson will be working with the WFP to promote the Kids Fighting Hunger Campaign and will visit eight schools across Australia who have raised the most money for the WFP by the end of September.

The sailing star pinpointed this project and her part-time university studies as her main focuses this year.

SchoolAid, a national schools-based philanthropy organisation, founder Sean Gordon said he wanted to encourage kids to help themselves by helping others.

"The kids will be having fun playing a game and learning but they will also understand more about kids that are worse off and by default feel better about themselves," he said.
