Jackson to bear the flag in London

WOMEN'S basketballer Lauren Jackson has been named as Australia's flag-bearer at the opening ceremony for the London Olympics.

Opals star Jackson, 31, is competing at her fourth Games.

One of the world's greatest basketballers was told by Australian chef de mission Nick Green that she was the "perfect choice" for the role.

Jackson replied: "Why me? There are other better candidates than me."

But not according to Green, who said the flagbearer is also the team captain.
