Downpour did not stop Maddison delivering medal performance

AWFUL conditions were unable to stop Maddison Sherriff from delivering the best performance she has ever mustered at the IGA State Athletics Championships recently.

Maddison broke two personal-best marks in discus and shot put in pouring rain.

Her discus effort secured the bronze medal.

The rain was so bad at one stage that, just as Maddison was ready to throw, a five-minute break was taken to wait for the rain to ease.

"The discus circle was full of water," she said.

"It was just full where we were spinning."

But despite the less than ideal conditions, Maddison smashed any throw she had ever done in both disciplines.

She beat her best discus throw by close to a metre and her best in shot put by 40cm.

The 13-year-old was unsure how she managed the feat.

"I tried to do the best I could and it ended up working out," Maddison said.

"I was getting beaten and I managed to get over them on the last throw."

The advice from dad John before her last discus attempt was to throw as hard as she could.

Next thing, the medal was on its way to Gladstone, one of just three in the state carnival for the club.

With new confidence, Maddison is looking forward to continuing to improve as she grows.

"I have started to grow and have caught up a bit on everybody," she said.

Maddison's state results

  • Discus: 30.35m, bronze medal
  • Shot put: 9.88m, fourth
