Generous gift gives Mitchell a day to remember

IT IS not every day the Gladstone Cinema's gold room is filled with 12-year-old children.

But that is exactly what happened when Mitchell Luders and 30 of his friends were invited to watch The Boxtrolls on Thursday.

Mitchell recently returned from Brisbane, after his malignant tumour in his abdomen relapsed for a third time.

The invitation was made possible by the generosity of a local person who won the gold room movie as a prize, but  wanted Mitchell and his friends to enjoy it.

"I mean being able to go there when we're almost half the necessary age ... that happens once every four blue moons," Mitchell said.

The group had so much fun that he cannot wait to turn 18 to go again.

"I heard they do a bit of a cinema restaurant. I didn't do any of that but when I turn 18 that is what I'll probably do for my birthday."

Mitchell said the chairs were so comfortable that if there was no movie screening he could easily have had a sleep.

For the past three years he has battled the condition.

This year the cancer relapsed for the third time and mum Rochelle Luders said it was very aggressive.

"The cancer was too aggressive - aggressive chemotherapy was the best option," she said.

They will return to Brisbane in November.
