It’s the hidden fat that’s doing the most harm

ALTHOUGH most weight loss concentrates on fat on waistlines, it is fat inside your abdomen that can cause major health problems.

Harvard University has linked visceral fat, inside the abdominal cavity, to major health conditions including heart problems and type 2 diabetes.

Visceral fat is often close to the portal vein that transports blood to the liver.

Substances the fat releases can travel through the vein into the liver and cause fat deposits to build up on artery walls.

External or subcutaneous fat and internal or visceral fat have the same solution - a healthy diet and more exercise.

Heart Foundation Queensland health director Rachelle Foreman said fat "around the middle" could lead to heart, kidney and cancer problems and potentially lead to type 2 diabetes.
